Firelane Guest House

Nestled deep in a southwest Michigan forest, the Firelane Guest House takes advantage of the landscape's unique features while supplementing the necessary programmatic needs unachievable at the Main House.  The ground floor, crafted from board-formed concrete, is gracefully anchored into the hillside. This level serves as storage for classic cars and a well-equipped metal and wood shop. It not only harmonizes with the site’s natural contours but also serves as the solid foundation for the floor above.

Ascending to the second level, visitors are greeted by a panorama through uninterrupted perimeter glass. This level hosts the heart of the guest house, with open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas seamlessly interconnected. Private and storage spaces are nestled within a solid core in the center of the floor plate, eliminating the need for any walls around the perimeter. This design decision not only maximizes the forest views but also imbues the space with an ethereal quality. By day, the abundant natural light bathes the interior in warmth, and by night, the continuous glass transforms the guest house into a glowing lantern amidst the Michigan wilderness.

Environmental stewardship and visual integration were paramount in this design. The house is thoughtfully pushed into the hillside to minimize its visual impact, ensuring that guests approach through a scenic, winding gravel path. This deliberate placement ensures that the guest house is not just a destination but an integral part of the site’s experience, offering a tranquil retreat where the boundaries between the interior and exterior are beautifully blurred.
